The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is open to the public after a 17-month, $60.5 million overhaul. As one of the selected partners for the museum’s ambitious renovations, Exhibit Concepts was honored to have been chosen to design and build an all-new rotating gallery dedicated to the legendary four-time winners of the famed Indianapolis 500 race.
Located within the 100,000-square-foot museum, the new exhibit, Best of the Best: The Four-Time Winners, spans 5,000 square feet and showcases the stories of A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr., Rick Mears, and Hélio Castroneves—each of whom has left an indelible mark on motorsports and INDYCAR history.
Bringing together the spirit, innovation, and grit that define the Indianapolis 500, visitors are immersed in the lives and careers of these exclusive four-time winners through a dynamic blend of storytelling, rich visuals, and authentic artifacts. Each driver’s story is told through vibrant fabric graphics, curated digital interactives, immersive photo opportunities, and, of course, the centerpiece—four race-winning cars.
Working alongside Interpretive Planner Mary Seelhorst, Exhibit Concepts brought this gallery to life with a deep understanding of the Speedway’s legacy and the passion of its fans. From the sleek structures to the thoughtfully designed media experiences, every element was crafted to inspire visitors and celebrate a century of racing excellence.
“This project truly reflects the dedication and hard work of everyone involved,” says Account Executive Matt Short. “As someone deeply passionate about automotive history, I’m incredibly proud to contribute to this project for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and help share their legendary story with the world.”
In addition to the Best of the Best gallery, Exhibit Concepts has also been contracted to build a temporary gallery focused on the broadcasting history of the Indianapolis 500. That gallery is expected to open in late 2025.
This collection of projects builds on Exhibit Concepts’ long-standing commitment to creating immersive, educational, and inspiring permanent environments. Combining award-winning design, storytelling expertise, and world-class fabrication, we help museums, institutions, and brands bring their visions to life.
Additional renovations at the museum include more than 40,000 square feet of new space featuring several permanent galleries, motorsports artifacts from both the INDYCAR and NASCAR series, state-of-the-art racing simulators, an experiential “pit stop challenge,” a look at track safety features, and the all-new The Starting Line Experience.
We encourage visitors to step into this reimagined space, #ExperienceECI, and discover the powerful legacy of racing history up close. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
